DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Course Description:

This course is an exploration of digital photography, digital image-editing and photographic techniques. Students will learn how digital cameras capture images and the many usages of digital photography. The assignments listed below will teach students how capture successful images, using many different techniques. Students will learn photographic design and layout, and how to edit images using Adobe Photoshop. During the year students will develop a portfolio of their own photographic style. Students will explore different types of photography and the aspects of a career in photography. Students will be asked to explore the history of photography through the work of the master photographers.



Listed below you will find a partial list of the assignments which we will be doing throughout the year. These assignments may and will be changed and modified as the school year develops. Each assignment must be done in the order listed unless approved by instructor.


Students will be graded on the following:

Exam 20%

Class Participation 25%

Assignments 45%

Quizzes 10%


Class Expectations:


Students will be on time.


Students will allow 10 minutes to download images at the end of each class, if a student does not download his/her images they maybe erased.


It will be the student’s responsibility to turn in assignments on time.


Students will be allowed time to photograph during class.


Students will be responsible for maintaining their own files.


Students will be required to have id badge with them when photographing assignments on campus.


Students will obey the rules listed in the student handbook regarding computer usage.


Student will conduct himself or herself in a respectful manner when photographing assignments on campus and follow all the rules as stated in the student handbook. Any infractions of these rules may cost that student his/her privilege to photograph assignments on campus.


Each student will be required to maintain a loose-leaf notebook for class notes and handouts.


Students are required to make notation of images. Including f/stop, shutter speed and camera model information.


STUDENTS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FOLLOWING ASSIGNMENTS.

Each Photographic Assignment will be accompanied by a Adobe Photoshop Tutorial.


ASSIGNMENTS:


In advance of these assignments students will be shown examples of each assignment.


All finished assignments will be printed 8 x 10 in size.


1. Camera Introduction:


For this assignment students are allowed to photograph any subject they wish.

The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize students with the camera and computer procedures. Students will hand in one finished print and contact sheet. min 24 images


2. Learning Shutter Speeds:


Students will photograph subjects around campus that will demonstrate their understanding of how shutter speeds have an affect on your image. Students will produce 2 different images showing the affects of shutter speeds. min 24 images


3. Learning Depth of Field


Students will photograph 2 subjects utilizing depth of field one with only one item in focus and the other must be totally focused from front to back. min 24 images


4. Textures

a. Photograph 5 different textures.

b. Look for 3 items with a continuous tone and 2 with contrasting tones.

c. Print 2 different prints one from the continuous and one from the contrasting

min 36 images


5. Reflections

Look for reflections (not just a reflection in a mirror) any shinny item will give you a reflection, water, highly polished surface.

a. Photograph 24 items and make one finished print.


6. Point of View:

Students will select one item and photograph it from numerous points of view. Select a subject that allows you to photograph it from above, below, left, right, east and west. min 24 images


7. Circular Items:

Photograph items of a oval or circular nature, primary image must be a circle


8. Lines:

Your main emphasis for this assignments is to photograph lines, these lines may be actual or implied. Students will make a minimum of 24 photographs for this assignment.


9. Lens

Photograph 3 different subjects using wide angle, normal and telephoto lenses.

Photograph each subject from the same position using each lens without changing location.

Min. 24 images


10. Shadows

Photograph numerous subject matters around campus utilizing shadows as a intricate part of your photograph. min 24 images


11. Intersecting Lines:

Your main emphasis for this assignment is to photograph lines that intersect, these lines may be actual or implied. Students will make a minimum of 24 photographs for this assignment.


12. Family Portrait Restoration

Students will bring in a family photograph to restore.


13. Environmental Portrait

Photograph a family member or a friend a hands on activity such as woodworking, cooking or any type of hobby.

14. Low Light Photography

Photograph life using the cameras iso/H setting. Min 24 images


15. From the eye’s of a 2 year old:

Photograph the world from the viewpoint of a 2 year old. Min 24 images


16. Shadows:

A shadow or shadows will be your main subject. Min 24 images


17. Metaphors:

(piece of Cake, Hole in the Head, old flame, sharp as a tack,). Min 24 images


18. The hands are the eyes of the soul.

Tell a story using only a person’s hand, for this assignment you must tell a story only using a persons hands.


19. Portrait Photography

Students will learn the basics behind portrait photography.


20. Informal Portrait

Students will use studio flash to create an informal portrait of a classmate. Min 24 exp.


21. Hollywood Star.

Recreate a portrait of a celebrity or a famous portrait. Students will select a photograph from a magazine and recreate it to the best of their ability using lights in the studio.


22. Product Photography

(This assignment will count as 2 assignments)

Photograph a product (must be approved by Mr. King)

Create / reproduce a current advertisement photographically

This assignment is to be done using Photography and Desktop Publishing
